Why is the Dog a symbol for Envy?

According to the book: "The Picture Book of Devils, Demons and Witchcraft" by: Ernst and Johanna Lehner, The Dog is a symbol for Envy (one of the 7 deadly sins)

I was wondering why this was? I usually thought of a dog being associated with loyalty.

Does anyone have any ideas?

GypsyLore teaches that dogs do stand for loyalty as do many other Wiccan & Pacan traditions. Books are the authors opinions meant to act merely as a guide to developing our own opinions. I've never heard a dog expressed in those terms before though, so I guess it's up to you to decide what they mean to you.
